Hasenclever, Walter

Playwright. Hasenclever began as a poet of Expressionism, though he is best known as a playwright of that style. His Der Sohn (The Son) premiered in 1916 at the Dresden Albert Theater and was afterward produced in several theaters. He then wrote a series of mostly forgettable Expressionist dramas, few of which were produced more than once. He turned to comedy in the mid-1920s and had success with Ein besserer Herr (A BetterSort of Gentleman, 1927) and Ehen werden in Himmel geschlossen (Marriages Are Made in Heaven, 1928).
